I'm Gareth, and I run a counselling service, operating in Exeter, looking to offer men an opportunity for counselling and therapy. I'm passionate about giving men their own platform to be able to invest time in their own wellbeing, and ultimately, helping people help themselves. Looking into getting therapy can be daunting, even scary for some. Coupled with the historical stigma around men asking for help, this can become too much for some. Whether it be issues around work, relationships, parenthood or historical trauma; sharing and working together can help you grow, change or simply feel better.
Having worked in many male-dominated environments, especially in sport, I have witnessed men being overworked, feeling low & under stress, but reluctant to invest time into themselves. With staggering statistics around the numbers of men having mental health difficulties, lack of strong friendships, and even taking their own lives; there is a growing understanding that all men can benefit from giving themselves the opportunity to engage in their own wellbeing.
Together with you, we can provide a safe, secure and judgment-free environment where you feel free to talk through any issues, thoughts and feelings that are affecting you.
Working together, will give you the opportunity to talk about what you want to talk about. All sessions are delivered in a person-centred manner. This means that the sessions content is determined by you, and we can spend as long or as little time on it as you wish. I may well ask questions, summarise and even challenge you at points - to help you better understand yourself, your situation, thoughts, feelings and emotions.
As a counsellor, I'm here to help you navigate through whatever you bring to therapy. Whether you're struggling with a current issue like, anxiety, depression, ADHD, work stress, self esteem, self confidence, grief or relationship issues, I'm here to support you through.
Also, it's common for guys to come and see us with historical issues. Like traumatic experiences, childhood experiences and even abuse. We can provide a platform with you to enable to work through these in your own time. Therapy can continue for as long as you feel you need it, whether it be long or short term.
There are 2 types of counselling currently. Firstly, online counselling. This is great for the of you that have limited time, and only have a small window of an hour a week. It can be flexible in terms of time and place, with many clients decided to have counselling from home or the office. We only ask that you make sure that you are in a safe space, where you can speak freely, without interruption or fear of others overhearing. These sessions are available nationwide.
Secondly, there's in-person counselling. This is in the form of walk and talk. This would be walking and talking in a calm outdoor space. for example, a park, public footpath etc. This allows us to spend some time outside of work and home, even get some exercise in, all whilst it still being a counselling session. Currently, these sessions are only available to those in the Exeter area.
In accordance with the BACP best practices, all of your personal details, notes and appointment information will be kept electronically, and will only be accessible to your counsellor via a 2-password system. Your privacy, anonymity & confidentiality are of paramount importance to us.
